Interested in being a Milwaukee Magazine editorial intern? At Milwaukee Magazine, we give you a taste of everything, as well as a sense of the big picture. That means designing a well-rounded internship experience during which you work side by side with editors, writers, designers and photographers to get an inside look at how the magazine works.
WHAT IS MILWAUKEE MAGAZINE LOOKING FOR IN AN INTERN?
We are looking for enthusiastic, determined, creative thinkers and hard workers who can spend 15 to 20 unpaid hours each week at the magazine for a semester or a summer. Periodically, there also may be secondary project-oriented internships that would last less than a semester or summer.
If you are able to work both independently and in a group, jump right into a project and think outside the box, you will fit in well.
WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION DEADLINES?
Internship deadlines are as follows:
- Summer: April 1
- Fall: August 1
- Spring: December 1

ART INTERNSHIPS

Fashion
Are you a Fashonista? Do you love fashion and shopping? Do you know where the new stores are before they open? Milwaukee Magazine's Fashion Editor and Art Director are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working students who want to gain experience in the fashion industry. This is one of the few opportunities in Milwaukee to gain fashion and photoshoot experience.
The internships are approximately 15 to 20 unpaid hours a week.(Mileage will be reimbursed.) You will work directly with the fashion editor. Internships last one semester or summer. Interns should be able to work both independently and on a collaborative team. Candidates must be self motivated, show initiative and be able to jump right into a project and be able to take direction and accept constructive criticism. If you have these traits you will be an asset to the team and we encourage you to apply.
Internship responsibilities include:
Assisting with picking up products for the photoshoots, preparing clothes and items for photoshoots, keeping track of items during the shoot, prepping items, returning items, and maintaining good relations with vendors/stores.
Interns must be a junior or senior from a four-year degree program and must be enrolled in an art or communications major. You should have an interest in magazines and knowledge of the city, shopping, fashion and stores.

Graphic Design
Milwaukee Magazine's design department is looking for enthusiastic, creative, hard-working students who aspire to be a top designer or art director. This is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain experience for a resume or portfolio.
The internships require 15 to 20 unpaid hours a week at the magazine office. Internships last for one semester or summer. Interns should be able to work both independently and on a collaborative team. Candidates must be self motivated, show initiative and be able to jump right into a project and be able to take direction and accept constructive criticism. If you have these traits you will fit in well and we encourage you to apply.
Internship responsibilities include: Assisting at photoshoots, concepting, helping with photo research, laying out pages, scanning images and attending press checks. The intern will also assist in the creation of ads and promo pieces for the sales department, as well as updating data on circulation spec sheets. In addition, interns will also assist in keeping track of invoices and updating other spreadsheets.
Interns must be a junior or senior from a four-year degree program and must be enrolled in a graphic design or related major. You should have an interest in magazine design and working knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop on the Mac OSX platform.

Photography
Milwaukee Magazine’s design department is looking for an enthusiastic, creative, hard-working photography student. This is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain experience for a resume or portfolio.
This internship requires 15 to 20 unpaid hours a week. Hours can be completed in a combination of on-location photoshoots, at a home computer or at the magazine’s office.
Internships last for one semester or summer. Interns should be able to work both independently and on a collaborative team. Candidates must be self-motivated, show initiative and be able to jump right into a project and be able to take direction and accept constructive criticism.
Internship responsibilities include taking photos for the magazine, color-correcting photos, resizing photos, attending photoshoots and working on photo illustrations.
Interns must be a junior or senior from a four-year degree program and must be pursuing a photography (or related) major. You should have an interest in magazine design and working knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop on the Mac OSX platform.

SALES & MARKETING INTERNSHIPS

Milwaukee Magazine's sales & marketing department is looking for an energetic and hard-working student at our Milwaukee Magazine location. This is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain professional experience to put on his or her resume.
The internship requires 15 to 20 unpaid hours per week. Internships last for one semester or summer. Interns should be able to work both independently and on a collaborative team. Candidates must be self motivated, show initiative and be able to jump right into a project, take direction and accept constructive criticism. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and problem solve a plus. If you possess these traits you will fit in well and we encourage you to apply.
The intern will learn to perform day-to-day duties that include interacting with a variety of business owners, advertising agencies and Milwaukee Magazine staff. Responsibilities vary from gathering research analysis, developing of client proposals / presentations, updating media kits and creating advertising boards. Other responsibilities include updating Web content on www.milwaukeemagazine.com. Additional duties include assisting advertising sales with client correspondence (via telephone, fax, e-mail, bulk mail et). Creative writing with experience in writing press releases preferred.
Interns must be a junior or senior currently attending a four-year degree program in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or related communications field. Must be proficient with the following programs: CRM, WORD, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. Organizational skills are essential.

ONLINE INTERNSHIPS

Online Intern
Are you a Web guru? Up to date on both local and national blogs? An independent worker? Knowledgeable about blog-updating software? A social networking buff? In the know about where the industry is headed? If so, Milwaukee Magazine wants you to be its next online intern.
Assist the Web Editor in all tasks related to milwaukeemagazine.com. This includes editing and writing copy, monitoring comments, finding photos, maintaining the events calendar, enhancing interactivity and updating social networking sites. This is an excellent way to gain experience in the Web leg of a successful publication.
Who is an online intern?
Interns are college juniors, seniors or graduate students, ideally majoring in journalism or a related field. Interns earn college credit and need to demonstrate proof of this upon accepting the internship. They work 15 to 20 hours a week over the course of a semester or summer. Milwaukee Magazine interns are not paid, but they trade their hard work for solid journalistic experience. We may consider interns outside of these guidelines in certain circumstances.

Online News Internship
Want to rack up a killer portfolio of clips working some of the most exciting news beats in town? Join an exciting new online-only publication hosted by Milwaukee Magazine that carries on the magazine’s reputation for fresh, in-depth reporting and strong writing. The internship offers great freedom to do original reporting on police, government, school and other beats.
Candidates must be students receiving college credit for the internship and be able to commit 15-20 hours a week. This is an unpaid position. A strong candidate will be a college junior, senior or graduate student who demonstrates strong news reporting and writing skills in clips from student (or other) publications.
Student or community newspaper experience is highly recommended. An ideal candidate will write stories on weekly deadlines and possibly share in some of the responsibilities of maintaining the publication. Photography skills are greatly appreciated but not required.
Strong grammar and well-organized, focused writing are a must. Interns will be encouraged to explore writing in magazine style and will work with an assistant news editor. Stories will vary in length, though brevity is welcome.

EDITORIAL INTERNSHIPS

Are you a slave to detail? A grammar guru? A word wizard? You'll spend some time honing your copy-editing and fact-checking skills.
Are you a private eye at heart? Do you enjoy looking past the front-page news to find the inside story? Then work with our Insider editor to dig up what's going on behind closed doors throughout the city.
Are you a trend-seeker? Write mini-reviews of the city's latest in everything.
Are you an organizer? Collect and sift through information on a long-term feature story project, working with top freelance writers and our editors.
You get the idea. Our semester- and summer-long internships give you hands-on experience. You'll be given assignments and deadlines. You'll accompany writers on interviews. You'll dig up public records and make phone calls. Interns are encouraged to take part in editorial meetings and offer opinions and story ideas. Milwaukee Magazine interns are not paid, but they trade their hard work for solid journalistic experience.
Past interns have gone on to work for Maxim, New York magazine, the Milwaukee mayor's office, a New York publishing house, the Associated Press, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Waukesha Freeman. Several have also returned to Milwaukee Magazine.
Who is an editorial intern?
Our interns are juniors or seniors in college, or graduate students. We may consider interns outside of these guidelines in certain circumstances. Interns earn college credit and need to demonstrate proof of this upon accepting the internship.
Prospective interns should have taken classes in reporting and writing for publication. They should be writing for a school or community newspaper or magazine and be able to supply at least three good writing samples (clips) of published work, not papers for an English class.
Interns should already have developed solid reporting skills they now want to practice and hone. They should be able to track people down, scour public records, conduct interviews and find information. They should possess strong grammar and spelling skills and be able to write in a variety of styles. Interns should demonstrate an eagerness to learn and an ability to build upon constructive criticism to improve their work.
